World History

Pre-Algebra

Grades: 7-12

What to purchase:

  • Books: BJU Press (Bob Jones) Pre-Algebra 2nd Edition (yellow cover with spiral shape) & Teacher Edition (Book 1 & 2; they contain answer key & written out solutions)
    • Christianbook.com currently has the textbook for $64 and the Teacher’s Edition for $95, but I’ve found many secondhand sets for less than half that price. Check out Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Facebook BJU Press resale group, etc. bjupress.com also has an etextbook rental for $31; unfortunately, the teacher’s manual is not available electronically.
  • Pencils & spiral notebook (for notes & homework) & graphing paper/notebook
  • Scientific or graphing calculator For higher level math your student will likely need a graphing calculator so if you’d prefer to invest in one now that would be great. I’d suggest a TI-84+ (or TI-84+ CE or Silver edition). These are all ACT approved. You can easily find these secondhand for around $40+. Check out Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Mercari, etc.

Fee: $150

Algebra 1

Grades: 8-12

What to purchase:

  • Books: BJU Press (Bob Jones) Algebra 1 Third Edition (blue cover) & Teacher’s Edition (Book 1 & 2 contains answer key)
    • Christianbook.com currently has the textbook for $64 and the Teacher’s Edition (which includes Book 1 & 2) for $95, but I’ve found many secondhand sets for less than half that price. Check out Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Facebook BJU Press resale group, etc. bjupress.com also has an etextbook rental for half the price; unfortunately, the teacher’s edition is not available electronically. Keep in mind our goal is to hopefully have Algebra 1 & 2 classes at co-op next year so you’d most likely be able to resell to new students easily and recoup most if not all of your book investment.
  • Pencils & spiral notebook (for notes & homework) & graph paper/notebook
  • Graphing calculator I’d suggest a TI-84+ (or TI-84+ CE or Silver edition). These are all ACT approved. You can easily find these secondhand for around $40+. Check out Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, eBay, etc or ask around to see if you can borrow one.

Astronomy

Grades: 9-12th

Curriculum: Journey Homeschool Academy Astronomy Course

Students will watch a video in class of their weekly Astronomy lessons and follow along in their note taking guide in class. They will also complete a weekly quiz.

Field Guide Assignments:

Students get outside each week to observe the sky and do their weekly field guide assignment. Too cloudy? Too much light pollution? No worries. The course will teach you how to use an online planetarium to complete these assignments when needed.

Tentative Field Trip:

We will do our best to plan a field trip to a planetarium in Birmingham.

A Few Of The Things Your Student Will Learn…

  • Learn the #1 trick for finding your way around outside—even when you don’t have a compass.
  • Constellations seem impossible to find—isn’t that the truth? Your student will learn how to spot them so they practically jump out at you!
  • The secrets to how our modern calendar came to be—and what astronomy has to do with it.
  • You thought you knew Bible stories like the parting of the Red Sea, but until you know your astronomy, you’ll never fully understand them.
  • Once you understand the phases of the moon, something exciting happens: you’ll never see biblical holy days the same way again.
  • Learn how eclipses have stopped wars, saved explorers, and brought down empires.
  • The anatomy of the universe—it’s weirder than you think! We’ll walk you through black holes, neutron stars, and the furthest regions of space.
  • How astronomers kicked Pluto out of the planet club—and why Pluto had it coming.

What to purchase:

  • Student’s curriculum is included with the price of the course.

Fee: First student in family $300. Additional students in same family $150.
Venmo: mandy_smith9

Literature & Composition

Grades: 9-12th

Curriculum: Short Stories chosen by the teacher

Students will learn many different literary elements and learn how to write paragraphs and essays. They will also learn MLA format. Students will receive a short story to read and analyze each week. Class time will be spent discussing the short stories and learning about various themes/literary elements that can be found within the short story. A portion of class time will also be devoted to learning technical skills, such as parenthetical citation and how to structure a thesis. These technical skills will be applied in the upcoming assignments.

What to purchase:

  • Highlighters (different colors)
  • Notebook
  • Students will need access to Google Docs or Microsoft Word

Fee: $150
Paypal:acosper6@gmail.com
Venmo: @Anna-Cosper-1

World Geography

Grades: 9-12th (8th grade if seeking HS credit)

Curriculum:

  • Notgrass Exploring World Geography
  • Blob Mapping

Students will be expected to read 4-5 lessons a week, answer questions about the text, and complete map activities. Students will be given an assignment sheet each week with the work that will need to be completed at home. In class, we will discuss the lessons, work on maps and learn to draw the world from memory, and take quizzes. Grading in this class will be based on homework, class participation, and quizzes and tests. This class will give students 1 credit in social studies.

What to purchase:

  • Notgrass Exploring World Geography Part 1 and 2
  • Exploring World Geography Gazetteer

You will not need to purchase the Student Review or Quiz and Test Book. I will make copies of these as needed.

Notgrass offers quite a bit of supplemental reading for this course. You are welcome to purchase that if you wish to complete
those activities at home. We will not be using them in this class.

ACT Math Prep Course (First Semester)

Grades: 9-12th

What to purchase:

  • The Official ACT Mathematics Guide Second Edition. I’d suggest getting the hard copy, not the Kindle so you can write in/on it. It’s $20.31 on Amazon.
  • Pencils & notebook
  • ACT approved calculator (see act.org for more details). I highly suggest a graphing calculator like TI-84+ or TI-84+ CE or TI-84+ Silver edition. As of right now, these are allowed by ACT. I will be teaching how to use a graphing calculator to solve common ACT problems so owning or borrowing one will be very helpful. You can easily find these secondhand for around $40. Check out Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, eBay, etc.
