22: The Precious Privilege of Faith

Message 22 of 34 in the series Letters from Peter

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Peter 1:1-4, ESV

  • Read 2 Peter 1:12-15

How do you think it impacted the original readers of this letter to know that Peter expected his death for the sake of Christ was near? How does it impact the way you read this letter today?

  • The church in Peter’s day was dealing with trials from outside the church as well as inside the church. Based on what was discussed during the sermon can you give an example of these issues? What is the root cause of every difficulty we face in this life?

  • Read 2 Peter 1:4

What does it mean for a Christian to “escape the corruption of this world”? According to the sermon, what is the sole way that this escape is possible? Complete this sentence: ______________ is the act of God putting sinners in a right relationship with himself.

  • Read 2 Peter 1:1

Faith is the act of believing. Peter says that faith is “obtained” which is a word that means to receive or to be given. What is the origin of the faith that is in us? Are we responsible for exercising this gift?

  • Read 2 Peter 1:1 again.

Peter refers to Gentile and Jewish Christians as having “faith of equal standing”. It was said in the sermon that faith supersedes any division or distinctions made by man. What are some things we may use to make distinctions among people in the church? How do we practically build unity and connectedness in the church in a gospel sense?
