26: Crucial Confidence

Message 26 of 34 in the series Letters from Peter

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

Discussion Questions

  • Read Colossians 2:6-7

In your own words describe what it means to be rooted in Christ. Based on the sermon, how does confidence in what we believe is true impact our zeal (affection) for God?

  • What were the 3 influences the church in Peter’s day was experiencing that combined to threaten their confidence in the return of Christ? How do these same influences impact us today as we try to live a Christian life? According to 2 Peter 3:3-4 what was the reason that these false teachers (scoffers) were denying the eventual return of Christ?

  • Knowing that the church’s confidence was being threatened, what 2 pieces of authoritative evidence did Peter present to strengthen the church? Name 4 events in the life of Jesus that the Apostles were eyewitnesses to.

  • In your own words describe the Transfiguration event that Peter speaks of in v16-18 (If needed, also review Mark 9:1-3). Why do you think this event was so significant to him?

  • Name some specific things about the life and death of the Apostles that serve as evidence to the validity of their testimony about Jesus. If we believe their testimony about the return of Jesus, why should we live preparing for the day we meet him?
