23: Because of What God Has Done

Message 23 of 34 in the series Letters from Peter

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

2 Peter 1:3-7, ESV

  • Read 2 Peter 1:3

In your own words, describe what is meant by the power of God. Read Acts 17:24-25. How does God’s independence (that he does not need anything) help affirm his power. How is the independence (power) of God contrasted to mankind in Acts 17?

  • Read 2 Peter 1:3

God’s power provides everything we need for spiritual life and spiritual growth. Explain in your own words what this means. What is the means by which God’s power is made effective in our lives? Read John 17:26. How do we come to know God on an intimate level?

  • Read 2 Peter 1:4

The precious and very great promises Peter mentions involve God taking us from where we were and placing us in a new position before Him. Using Ephesians 2:1-6 or Titus 3:3-7, describe our life before Christ and then our life after Christ.

  • Peter says that because of what God has done for us, we can become partakers of the Divine Nature. This does not mean that we become gods. It does mean that we can share in some of God’s attributes. Name some of the attributes that belong to God that He shares with us.

  • Read Philippians 2:12-13

Explain this verse in your own words. How does it describe growth in godliness – both God’s role and our role in that process? Based on this, what does Peter mean when he says that we are to supplement our faith with certain characteristics?
