20: Believe God Cares For You

Message 20 of 34 in the series Letters from Peter

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:5b-7, ESV

  • Read 1 Peter 5:5

In your own words what does it mean that God opposes the proud? Is this warning for the lost, for believers, or for both? What might it look like for a believer to face God’s opposition due to pride?

  • According to Peter, what is the pathway for us to receive an abundance of God’s grace? Read Philippians 2:3-5. Based on this passage, what does it look like for a believer to clothe themselves in humility?

  • Read 1 Peter 5:6-7

What do you think Peter means that God will exalt (or lift up) those who humble themselves to him? It was said in the sermon that anxieties are the interests or cares of our life that we often get anxious about. What are some of the interests that you are anxious about right now? What would it look like for you to “wait for God” to lift you up in those specific situations?

  • According to the sermon – what are two things that give evidence that we are trusting God? Read Psalm 84:11 and read 1 Peter 5:7 again. How do the truths in these passages help you to wait on the LORD?

  • Read Psalm 55:22 and Galatians 6:2

How do we practically cast our burdens to the LORD? What are some examples of how God might intend for us to carry the burdens of other Christians?
